Hedgehog @ Abernyte
This term at Abernyte our Eco focus on biodiversity has been centred around hedgehog habitats preservation. We are aiming to become Hedgehog Champions through the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. We found out that hedgehog numbers are declining so we want to do all we can to help! Right now, we are working towards our GOLD award for helping hedgehogs. So far, we have built a hedgehog house, set up a stall at Abernyte festival to help raise awareness, built a pond for them to drink out of, built a bug house so they can get food and we have put out some paper and charcoal ink to check for hedgehog prints to find out in we have any here at Abernyte Primary.
We now know that we have hedgehogs as we found footprints which we have identified as a hedgehog and hopefully tonnes more will come to visit us in the future. What we are going to do next is set up a night camera in our hedgehog house, buy a sign to put outside by the road in the playground from the money donated at Abernyte festival and create more hedgehog houses from log piles. We are going to make the hedgehog homes before October/November time as the hedgehogs go into hibernation and wake up in March/April.
Watch this space for any updates and please follow us on our Twitter feed @abernytep if you want to become involved please send an email to abenyte@pkc.gov.uk.
Please Remember: If you want to feed hedgehogs, they love cat/dog food, but they do not like milk and bread.
